Fire Works

Fire Works

Year: 2024

Duration: ~ 5 minutes

Instrumentation: Soprano, Piano

About this piece:

Fire Works is inspired by wildfires consuming everything in their path, not least the precious few north american summer months. Urgent and menacing, the music grows denser in its repetition until it breaks texture completely. The piece attempts to convey fire’s horrors, smoke’s infiltration, and feelings of panic and helplessness the climate crisis ignites. Fire Works is written for (Art)songlab 2024 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, with lyrics by Jess Woolford. One will notice that Woolford does not use capital letters in her poetry and the same is true throughout the score. This subtle, though grammatically obvious, choice is sinuous as smoke.
